Having Some Fun At the Golden Puck by Jenn Russell
The Hagersville Novice Local League Hawks traveled to Port Colborne this past weekend to participate in the Annual Port Colborne Golden Puck Tournament.  The first scheduled game was on February 26th against the Woolwich Wildcats.

The kids were all ready to play and proved this within the first 20 seconds of the game as Koen Berkel skated in scoring the game opener, unassisted.  Cameron Coffey was amazing between the pipes, denying Woolwich any opportunities of hitting the board and the defensive team was phenomenal in getting the puck out of our zone.

The Hawks offensive team continued to light up the board in the second when Avery Heaslip found the puck on the end of his stick and wasted no time landing a goal, assisted by William Voituk and Jacob Yates.  The next goal was scored by Yates and assisted by Voituk and Heaslip.  The Hawks finished up the second when Heaslip scored two more with his lucky stick, completing his hat trick and putting the team’s score at an incredible 5-0.  Heaslip’s first goal was assisted by Devyn Russell and Madelynn Lammel and his hat trick goal was assisted by Tristan Hoyt.

Woolwich scored 3 goals in the third, but the Hawks also added one more to their side, scored again by Yates and assisted by Emmitt Houwer and Owen Young.  The Hawks took the first game 6-3 with Avery Heaslip earning MVP and honorable mentions to Cameron Coffey and Jacob Yates.

It was an early morning for the Hawks on February 27th as they headed to the arena, before sunrise, for their second game of the tourney.  They were scheduled to play one of the hometown teams, Port Colborne 2.  By the end of the first, the Hawks appeared to be in pretty good shape, leading the board 3-0.  Avery Heaslip, having a terrific tournament, scored two of the goals, one assisted by Madelynn Lammel and the other unassisted.  The other goal scored this period was an amazing shot by Koen Berkel.  Cameron Coffey, also having a terrific tournament, made some fantastic saves for this team.

Port Colborne bounced back, evening the score once again in the second, and the board remained locked at 3 until an untimely penalty was called with 24 seconds left in regular play.  Unfortunately for the Hawks, Port Colborne pulled ahead right at the end taking the game 4-3.  Good try Hawks; you all had an amazing game.

The team returned to the rink late in the afternoon of the 27th to play a very skilled team from Lincoln.  It was clear from Lincoln’s first shot that the Hawks were going to have a tough game.  The Hawks gave it all they had in them, but it was evident that the early morning rise had taken its toll on the team.  The only goal scored was by Jacob Yates, in the second, assisted by William Voituk and the Hawks hopes of continuing on vanished with the final buzzer of the third.  Great try Hawks; you all played very well this tournament and should be very proud of yourselves.
