Respect in Sport (Hagersville Minor Hockey)

PrintRespect in Sport

Respect in Hockey is a concept that receives considerable attention in both minor hockey and in community sport. The Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) is committed to the prevention of abuse, bullying and harassment, and the education of our membership.

At the 2013 OMHA’s Annual General Meeting, it was announced that the OMHA will move to become a complete ‘Respect’ integrated association effective the 2014-2015 season.

Effective August 31, 2014, the OMHA ‘Respect in Hockey’ initiative will require:
· At least one parent or guardian of each player registered in minor hockey in the OMHA to complete the Respect in Sport Parent Program as a condition of participation. The one-hour online course is a proactive, educational program that empowers parents with the tools to ensure the game is enjoyable and respectful for themselves, their children and all other stakeholders in the game – 1 hour course, $12.
· Team Officials (Bench staff), On-ice Officials and On-ice volunteers (age 16 and above) to complete the online Respect in Sport - Activity Leader Program or in-class Speak Out certification 3 hour course, $30
All team officials must have Speak Out or Respect in Sport, in addition to all other Certification appropriate to their position.

The Respect in Sport** Parent Program reinforces a parent’s role by encouraging positive sport behaviors and providing insight into other roles, such as coaches and officials, play. The Respect in Sport Parent program empowers parents to ensure their child’s safety, encourages positive and effective communication, and creates a standard of respectful behavior for all parents of active kids. Specific topics include:

·         5 common negative parent behaviors

·         Child development/nutrition and hydration/rest/injuries.

·         Interacting with coaches, officials, and other parents.
